Blogger’s note: Will Ferry, my guest blogger today, is a former client, who then became a friend, and now a frequent conversation partner, whom I have watched evolve into a coach in the 3 years I have known him. But not just any coach, one who is caring, urbane, really smart, and compassionate, a rare combination.

I know many of you reading here will enjoy his POV!

So why are so many smart, capable professionals living without a compelling personal vision?

In my work coaching experienced engineers through burnout, I’ve noticed a silent epidemic: high performers who’ve optimized themselves into a corner. They’re reliable, efficient, and respected, but disconnected from their higher purpose. Promotions come and go. Incomes rise. But inside? Things for them start to feel flat. Dull. Off.

Very few clients I work with have created a personal vision prior to our first session. In fact, this step is the most surprising for many of them. Some struggle to articulate what they want. One even told me, “The future makes me anxious.”

Why do I feel a personal vision is so important? It’s about reconnecting with a future that feels alive and fully yours. A vision that pulls you forward – not because it’s logical, but because it’s emotionally activating and deeply meaningful.

When clients finally put on paper (or computer) what they really want – not what looks good on LinkedIn – it’s like flipping the power back on.

And that power needs to shine inwards AND outwards.

The way you see yourself should match how your colleagues and network perceive you. LinkedIn skills endorsements and recommendations aren’t just formalities – they’re proof points of alignment between your self-perception and public credibility. When those elements reinforce each other, your message becomes magnetic.

What have I discovered? Most technical professionals were never taught to dream big.
They were taught to solve. Execute. Deliver.

And emotions? Those got boxed away – too unpredictable, too inconvenient.

Dreaming feels risky. Selfish. Even dangerous.

So instead of designing their careers, they drift from opportunity to opportunity – like a plastic bag blowing in the wind. They default. And LinkedIn becomes a highlight reel of bullet points that don’t tell the real story: talented people quietly losing their spark.

When I work with clients, I walk them through a process of deep realignment.
We audit their energy. Decode what truly motivates them. And architect a future that blends purpose with practicality in vivid, personal detail. This acts as their North Star, guiding them forward.

From there, everything changes. Goals feel magnetic, not forced. Habits stick. Confidence returns.

LinkedIn is where many of my clients find me, but it’s also where they first start rewriting their story. After this realignment, they show up differently: clearer, bolder, more authentic. And their network notices.

Because the moment you define your true direction, opportunities stop passing you by. They start showing up in your inbox.

You don’t need perfect clarity to begin. You just need the courage to want more.

I call this process Dream Sequence. It’s the second step of my 8-week coaching program, The Fulfillment Framework. It’s where the spark gets reignited – and the shift from burnout to bold vision truly begins.
