Oh my, where is he going with this, you may wonder.
Let me rant.
I often post here, and ask, no make that, nearly beg, for comments.
Not emojis, but human words of conversation. Not that I am lonely, but I do crave intelligent conversation around topics I feel go short-changed.
And a sincere and warm thank you to those who do spend the time and offer their brainwork to my brainwork. Some do so daily, which is the highest compliment I can receive.
When I ask for comment back, either it’s crickets chirping (not very brainy), one or two kindred spirits offering me their thoughtful intelligence on top of my thoughts, or even if I ask for no emojis, I get them.
Emojis are not brainy.
So in the style of “Sex in the City,” I ask: are we too busy to be more kind? More encouraging? More unselfish? Less self-important?
Do you actually read so many posts on LinkedIn that you are overwhelmed and cannot afford the time to: congratulate, tell why you agree with the post’s reasoning, offer phrases–and heaven forbid–write sentences of why that post spoke to you, or did not? All of these to add onto the post a dollop of your own wit and wisdom.
Here’s the rub: I’d rather get select, educated words that weave into a rich tapestry of our conversing about a topic, than silence.
I’d rather you ignore me than offer me your “smiley-faces” and “thumbs up” even if LinkedIn provided you this simplistic facility.
I’d rather you go further than “good post Marc.” Because you can. And how will I ever know what you thought, without further explanation?
I’ll take silence so long as someday you promise to tell me, someday, in sentences. a relatable story how I helped you, why you persevered and won, and when you rose to new heights, all because you read it here.
I will wait for that.
Please do not emoji-bomb my work. I spent time and braincells on this thinking.
Ignore me under these rules, but know that I seek your qualitative comments above and beyond any other action you might place on my posts.
Please.
