LinkedIn, despite its name, does not give you the ability to add live links in your About or Experience sections, but it does in others. Like your Features, Awards, Projects, Activity, etc.
Here’s the rub: sometimes these links get changed, probably not by you but by the host as in the magazine where your article appeared, the picture of you on the website of the group giving you an award, and so it’s always in your best interest to check to be sure your live links are still live.
Or live with the embarrassment of someone poking you to tell you what you may have best been able to avoid.
Idea: put a recurring quarterly (or monthly) event on your electronic calendar to not only review your profile for improvements and updates needed, but also to check those links. I posted my upcoming events and put a note to myself on my calendar to remove the one from the day before, calendarized for the day after the vent passed.
You see why? I never look like I was asleep at the wheel.
You will not be wasting your time in either pursuit, updating your profile or checking links..
