There are times when an email or a text are just not appropriate. They convey little, or worse, mistaken intonation.
LinkedIn allows you to attach an audio message when you use the mobile app.
You get a minute to record your persona into your message. No more. If you need less, so much the better.
Grab a few colleagues to gather around and add color to your words.
Happy anything messages, atta-person messages on a success or a promotion or a new job, short and sweet. Sweet to the receiver too. Memorable, right, like we want to be?
Sometimes not-so-good news has to be conveyed with the right intonation too. We lost the contract, we were not selected for the project, looking for new work, missed you on the scheduled zoom chat, I think I am being ghosted by the person you referred to me. Disappointment is expected, anger is not appropriate. There may be a particularly good reason for the miss. Use the opportunity to learn from it and perhaps you will redeem yourself for another go at “it.”
The same audio message can also enhance a video message on LinkedIn. On the mobile and the desk top versions, there is a small black camera icon at the top of every message page. Say it and let your intonation and facial expressions show your best sides. You can also ask for an instant meeting if they are on LinkedIn or request one for later.
Be deliberate and be selective how you use these. Be yourself and be real. Use the right tone and not allow mistaken impressions. Speed and efficacy of messaging is yours to finesse now that you where to find it and know how to use it.
