Back to basics Tuesday: pronouns on #LinkedIn

Regarding pronouns on LinkedIn:

  1. Use “I” throughout your personal profile, as if you are speaking about yourself, directly to the reader
  2. Use “we” throughout your company profile Page, as if you are speaking about yourselves as a firm to the reader (even if you are a 1-person shop)
  3. Use “he/him” or “she/her” or “they/them” {or customize your own} after your name on your LinkedIn personal profile if you like (a personal decision). For more on this new option, see https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/129291.

Use your own preference in #3 above, or not, but IMHO you must use personal pronouns in #1 and #2 above. Thus sayeth Mr. Halpert your LinkedIn guru. That’s what I think, so you will look more approachable as a result.

Notice I didn’t say:

Bad:

“Marc thinks” or

Worse:

“Mr. Halpert thinks” or

Worst,

  • Thinks (like a resume)

Be real and conversational in pronoun choices, not factoid-y/resume-y or pretentious.
