Thursday thought: “What do you want me to say here?”

“What do you want me to say here?”

I get this question more often than I like from coaching clients.

As we review each section of their LinkedIn profile, we work together to add some new material, rearrange material misplaced there, renovate old leftovers, test links, restate experiences to be more relevant to today, I answer them back with “whatever you want that truthfully makes you look best.”

This is not about what I want, it’s about what the client wants to say but doesn’t know how.

Or give themselves permission to say.

Or need reassurance that they have a voice worth heeding as readers stop by.

Or, the worst scenario, it’s their only online chance to make their own case why they do what they do and how that is worthy of notice.

Of interview. Of getting hired.

Job seeker or entrepreneur. Young or elder. Any gender. Any culture. Any nationality.

Friends, the beaten-in inferiority grey-cloud complex many walk around under is a hard one to shirk. It’s my exercise in helping them give themselves permission to be amazing-er than the competition.

What color is the cloud above your head? Grey and gloomy or radiantly white? Can it be fluffed even further? Yes. So try to make an improvement over the last time you set forth your career narrative on LinkedIn.

Chances are you have something brighter and more ethereal to say.
