Precedence Day

Group of People Standing Indoors

Not a typo.

Lincoln’s Birthday + Washington’s Birthday = Presidents’ Day, today.

In fact Congress started in 1879 and made the third Monday in February a federal holiday. Of course, this morphed into a retailer’s opportunity as a big sale day, another for the first quarter of the year since they must have recuperated from the Christmas retail insanity by now and have more to enrapture you.

But I prefer to look at this as Precedence Day. Be honest, what new year resolution change have you made since January 1 that carries into this week, and beyond?

For me, I self-declared 2024 to be my year of co-collaboration with select colleagues. This week I am speaking with two such great colleagues: Adrian Miller, on February 20, and Scott Mason on February 22, respectively.

The precedent I set urges me forward, to find my best and most admired co-collaborators and hatch compelling topics to collaborate on.

Perhaps there are multiple sessions on sales and LinkedIn, but not as focused as Adrian‘s and my lenses. Perhaps no one has ever given as talk on the topic of charisma in professional legal branding, but just wait until Scott and I deliver our “take.”

How can you set a precedent for yourself?

  • Consider creating an environment around you full of smart people and propose a topic to explore with each.
  • Enrich others, always setting the precedent bar higher.
  • Draw others to both your insights and build that audience.
  • Stick to precedent-setting, precedent-improvement, and precedent-crystallization, as it is your jewel, and one for increased self-examination and collaboration. Never set it and forget it.
  • Start and stretch your capabilities. Always reach higher, further, deeper.
  • Tell us when you offer the co-collaboration sessions so we can witness your, and your colleague’s, auras.
  • Repeat all of the above in a new cycle.

This is the game of brand recognition…start now then your expertise precedes (the root of precedence) you.

Happy Presidents’/Precedence Day.
