Skillful skills listing

Skills are very powerful concepts to show: they allow you as a seasoned professional to discern the right course of action, earned through hard work. They must be demonstrated ifyou say you have them. As Seth Godin once said in his blog:

(I guess my skill in sharpening images needs honing.)

Today I read a ringing endorsement from another smart guy about why listing the right skills are important, from Jeff Weiner, CEO of LinkedIn, who said (quote from the article I cited):

These are qualities that you don’t necessarily pick up from a degree. There are qualities…that have a tendency to be completely overlooked when people are sifting through résumés or LinkedIn profiles. And yet, increasingly, we find that these are the kinds of people that make the biggest difference within our organization.

Increasingly I hear this mantra: Skills, not degrees. It’s not skills at the exclusion of degrees. It’s just expanding our perspective to go beyond degrees.

Degrees can go stale or are an important stepping stone to making you whom you are today.

But skills stay with you, are built on, and as I like to say, are in your back pocket, ready to be taken out and used again at the right time.

Skills not degrees, indeed! Thanks Seth and Jeff.
